Chapter Fifteen

Ian The cops fanned out in search of the two of us, so Levi and I got the hell out of Dodge. In spite of our aching legs and burning lungs, we took off down another alley, letting the maze of narrow passageways guide us as far from the main drag as we could get. Challenging in a tiny town like this, but even Prince Rupert had its side streets and back roads.

Once we were safely away from those pursuing us, and I could no longer hear a single heartbeat besides Levi’s within a comforting radius, we slowed to a walk.

“I can almost guarantee the cops are going to turn him over to the clan. This is a clan matter, so human authorities want to wash their hands of it as soon as they can. My guess is they’ll turn him over before sunrise. Or when it’s still dark anyway.”

“Yeah, or they’ll just shove him out into the sunlight.” I shuddered. Levi squeezed my arm. “This is where my clan being a bunch of vindictive assholes comes in handy. They’ll want to make an example of him, which means they’ll want to take him home.”

Bile rose in my throat, and I swallowed hard.

“Even if the clan wants to kill him—and I have no doubt they do—the cops won’t want to deal with that.” Levi lowered his voice to a gentle whisper. “It’ll buy us some time. We can get him out of there.”

“God, I hope so.”

“We will. But we’d better do something. Sunrise isn’t for hours, but no sense wasting time.”

“Good point.” I chewed my lip as I looked up and down the mostly empty street. “I think we need a cab.”

“Can we afford one?”

“You know what they say,” I said. “Time is money. We don’t have much choice.”

“Except there aren’t any cabs around.”

“Haven’t seen a damned pay phone, either,” I said. “Which means we go where the cabs are this time of night.”

“Bars?”

“Precisely.”

We trudged through the icy streets to a block where neon lights burned and the frigid air was sour with beer and puke. Just as I’d hoped, a few dirty cabs lined the curb, their yellow paintjobs dulled by sand and salt. I took a few deep breaths and hoped Levi couldn’t sense my nerves. A cab was uncomfortably conspicuous, not to mention tapping into our rapidly waning financial resources, but time was of the essence here. If we wanted to get Darius out, then we had to spend the money and take the risk.

I had the driver drop us a few blocks from the rental lot. Right about where Darius and I had parked our original car while we stole the one the police had eventually tracked to us.

After I’d paid him, I waited until he drove off. I adjusted the backpack straps on my shoulder, then tucked my hands into my parka and nestled my face into the collar. I nodded down the road toward the rental lot.

“This way.”

“Are you sure you know what you’re doing?” Levi asked as we walked.
